The cost of producing a short film in Nigeria can vary from nothing to about fifteen million Naira, depending on what you are planning to achieve.
As a Nigerian filmmaker, the number one challenge you will encounter is securing funds to pay for locations, especially for indoor scenes in sitting rooms and bedrooms, and also getting professional actors who will believe in your vision to work for almost free.
Producing a short film is one of the most common ways independent filmmakers gain experience, showcase creativity, and build portfolios.
But one key question always comes up: “How much will it cost?” The answer varies widely depending on your film’s scope, production quality, and creative requirements.
In this post, I will guide you on breaking down realistic cost ranges for short film production in Nigeria, what drives those costs, and how to plan a budget that fits your goals.

What Affects Short Film Production Costs

Here are the following things that will affect the cost of your short film productions;
- Script and Story Complexity
- Crew Size & Expertise
- Equipment Rental
- Actors & Talent
- Locations & Permits
- Post-Production
- Extras
1. Script and Story Complexity
The major factor in how much your film will cost is the complexity of your story. A story that has many locations would naturally cost more than a film with a single location.
As a filmmaker, you need to write your story around your budget. It can be tempting to execute ambitious film projects, but that is only possible if you have the funds.
For me, when I want to do a small budget production, I usually stick with outdoor scenes or a single location that would fit and wouldn’t cost more than a hotel accommodation fee for a single day.
A simple room scene is cheaper than:
- Action sequences
- Multiple locations
- Special effects
- Period or costume requirements
The more creative your ambition, the higher the cost of production.
2. Crew Size & Expertise
The crew size and their expertise are determining factors for the cost of your film production. Hiring a professional cinematographer like Nora Awolowo will cost more money than hiring a beginner director of photography.
Most filmmakers usually cut down expenses by wearing many hats on set, like being the director, cinematographer and editor. Alternatively, collaborating with other filmmakers would reduce the cost of production.
For a mid to high budget film, costs rise with:
- Director of Photography
- Producer
- Sound recordist
- Production assistant
- Lighting technicians
- Makeup/wardrobe
- Script supervisor
- Production manager
Experienced crew = higher quality but also higher cost.
3. Equipment Rental
Equipment rentals make up a significant percentage of the cost for a short film production, especially if you are looking at working with cinema-grade cameras.
For independent filmmakers, you can always use your smartphone, DSLR, or mirrorless camera to shoot your short films. But, ensure you make provision for using a professional lavalier or short gun microphone.
If you are producing a mid to high budget film, then you need to budget for the following equipment rentals;
- Camera: DSLRs, mirrorless, cinema cameras
- Lenses
- Lights and modifiers
- Sound gear
- Stabilisers, gimbals, drones
Higher-end gear produces cinematically richer visuals.
4. Actors & Talent
Hiring actors will take up a significant portion of your budget, except you’re calling in favours, where you will spend less on talent fees.
If you’re restricted by budget, I advise you to get friends and aspiring actors to work with you on your project.
Otherwise, you will have to spend between ten thousand Naira and five million for the actor’s fee, depending on the scope of your project.
Here is how much Nollywood actors are paid per day on film sets;
| Amount per day | Experience Level |
|---|---|
| ₦10,000 – ₦25,000 | Newcomers |
| ₦30,000 – ₦150,000+ | Mid-level established or character talent |
| ₦200,000+ | Established actors |
Good performances can elevate a film’s impact significantly.
5. Locations & Permits
Securing a location for your film shoot requires money whose cost depends on the type of location.
A few years ago, when I wanted to shoot a scene in a family sitting room, my friend was able to convince a family to allow us to use their home for free and even get the mother of the home to act as the mother in the scene.
Using scenes like public places that do not require a permit is the best strategy if you are doing a low-budget film.
Shooting at
- Family homes = lowest cost
- Rented venues = moderate cost
- Public spaces (permits required) = legal fees, security
Always plan for rentals and permits
6. Post-Production
Post-production is a necessary part of a film project that has its own budget whose cost determines the quality of the film.
If you’re an independent filmmaker, you can reduce post-production costs by learning video editing, colour grading and sound design.
For mid to high budget films, post-production costs will cover the following;
- Editing
- Color grading
- Sound design
- Music and effects
- Visual Effects (VFX)
- Titles/graphics
- Mastering and deliverables
Post-production often takes as long as or longer than the shoot itself.
7. Extras
For every film project, there will be miscellaneous expenses, and you must prepare a budget for these unplanned expenses.
The day I shot my short film “Blame the Devil”, we got on set and realised there was no electricity. Even though we had a generator, we found that there was no wiring in the building, so we had to run around to buy wire to use with the generator.
This is an example of some of the unforeseen circumstances that may occur on set.
Examples of miscellaneous expenses are;
- Transportation
- Meals (catering)
- Insurance
- Damage to Appliance and Equipment
- Electrical Equipment
- Settlement for Community Taskforce
- Misc. fees for delays or overtime
