Acting is a beautiful profession, especially for those passionate about storytelling. It is the act of telling a story in someone else’s words and life. It is pretending to be someone or something while passing on information.
Also, it involves using your voice, face and body to show feelings, thoughts and expressions to show actions of a person and make the viewers feel it is real.
Actors and actresses are seen as legends, being part of childhood memories. Watching veteran actresses and actors and Bollywood sweethearts such as Genevieve Nnaji, Rita Dominic, Ramsey Noah, and other actors, seeing how they do it effortlessly, can fuel the passion for acting.
The desire to pass on information, while having fun and being paid, sounds so good. Not every job gives you both fun and money simultaneously, but, like two sides of a coin, not so simple as picking a biscuit from a store or choosing a favourite colour.
Have you ever felt like being an actor at any point in time? Well, this is a time to learn because beyond the glam, action and camera, there are lots of things to do, and this article is here to guide you in on steps to take and common mistakes to avoid
How to Start an Acting Career in Nollywood

Here are a few steps to help actualise your acting career;
- Be Emotionally and Psychologically Ready
- Be Ready for the Spotlight and Gossip Blogs
- Be Confident in Your Craft
- Take an Acting Class
- Start Acting
- Build Your Portfolio
- Network Like Your Life Depends on It
- Brand Yourself
- Put Yourself Out There
- Get an Agency or a Manager
1. Be Emotionally and Psychologically Ready
Starting a career in Nollywood is uncertain and can be intimidating. One thing to be ready for is rejection. I know it sucks, but believe me, there will be rejections, especially when you are a newbie, but brighten up, it is not over yet.
When I first had the dream of becoming an actor, I thought it would be a rosy journey like landing a big movie role that would catapult my career. However, over the years, I have realised that it is not as easy as popular Nigerian actors make it seem.
As an upcoming actor, it can be hard to land a good movie role or a breakthrough. Most of the time, you will have to take on roles like Waka-pass or housegirl roles to appear on screen.
For some people, they have to start from being a makeup artist on set for many years without any breakthrough in sight.
This is why, at this stage, I want you to develop a realistic mindset so you can succeed in the movie industry.
2. Be Ready for the Spotlight and Gossip Blogs
This goes hand in hand with being emotionally ready. One thing about being an actress is the stardom, spotlight, are gossip blogs.
Everybody wants to be in your business, it becomes like there is no privacy. Some blogs might create narratives about you that you will learn online. Imagine learning about yourself online? Crazy right? That is the spotlight for you.
Sometimes, it is not about the negative aspects; it can also be corrections from fans, friends, family members, but, can be cruel. You should develop thick skin for criticism, advice from fans and family, picking out the lessons and getting over the pains.
3. Be Confident in Your Craft
It is not enough to stand in front of the camera and say those lines by heart; can you act those lines?
Confidence comes with knowing that you know this acting thing very well. Watch those already in the craft, not just for fun, also, why they act the way they do, volunteer in local dramas, church drama, pick roles as extras, take up lines, memorise and act in front of some people, they can be your family members.
Also, don’t just be a ‘jack of all trades’, know your style, and the part that fits you most. When producers want a character for a scene that requires emotional range, they can guess people who will deliver.
For example, when you think of Playboys, your mind goes to Timini, IK Ogbonna. When you think of action, Sola Sobowale, Tobi Bakre and the likes.
4. Take an Acting Class
If you can afford an acting class, please enrol in one. Acting classes have various advantages, especially for newbies in the field of Nollywood. It provides the newbie with;
- A Scene Partner: These are people you act with. You act and practice with people and then get used to doing lines with different people. You learn when to enter, when to cut and the like.
- Access to Scripts: Not everybody will have access to scripts, especially when they have not gotten a role, but acting classes provide you with scripts from different writers. Here is an opportunity to know what style suits you most.
- Trainers to Teach You: One thing I have learned over the years is that you can learn something, but it is easier and faster to have a trainer or teacher, and that’s one benefit you will get here.
- Learning How to Perform in Front of Others: This might not be a big deal till you have to act in front of people. Acting involves not being shy, no matter the crowd, and you can start little here.
- Active Feedback From Others: You get active feedback from fellow trainees and trainers. You would know what you did right and wrong. Acting in front of a crowd that would tell you your mistakes without judging is cool.
- Learn How to Take Direction: Every director loves actors who can take direction. It makes the work seamless, and trust me, you build your contact card when you make work seamless for a director.
5. Start Acting
It is understandable if you don’t have the finances for acting classes, but some might not be as expensive as you think.
Make enquiries about various acting schools first, if it is something you can afford, then pay or save up, but if it is something beyond your budget, don’t give up.
Start, act, little drops make a mighty ocean. Join acting clubs, post on social media, and get active feedback; that is also another way to grow your social media accounts.
6. Build Your Portfolio
Every artist needs a portfolio to thrive in the movie industry. In the creative industry, it is not what you say you can do; it is what you can show you have done.
For you to be hired for a significant movie role, producers and directors need to see what you have done previously in a movie.
How can you get a portfolio as a newbie?. The solution is simple: get yourself featured in small productions around you.
Look for upcoming directors with vision to get featured in their works. You may not be paid or receive recognition, but you’d definitely build your portfolio using this method.
Brand yourself, get a professional headshot, and write a resume clearly stating your acting experiences. Record monologues, dramas, and skits of yourself and post on your social media accounts.
7. Network Like Your Life Depends on It
Build connections, they no dey use mouth tell person twice. In every field, who you know opens doors faster than what you know.
A majority of popular actors do not attend auditions; word-of-mouth recommendations are their selling point.
You need to have a new circle of friends of film people, ranging from directors, crew members and fellow actors.
For example, you are more likely to land a movie role from a job posting on WhatsApp status if you have the right contacts.
Attend acting workshops, auditions, film festivals, meet people, exchange contacts and social media handles.
Become friends with fellow actors, or people you meet in auditions, also follow and react to casting directors, producers, and film pages on social media, don’t just be a ghost follower, let the person(s) feel your presence.
8. Brand Yourself
As an actor or actress, you are your office; brand yourself! Take clear professional headshots, not filter or AI pictures, that you can use to submit applications.
From my experience, some upcoming actors never get any meaningful roles because of the way they dress or speak.
The biggest mistake is for you to shortsell yourself to directors and filmmakers. Ensure you equip yourself with the right knowledge and skills to plan good Nollywood movie roles.
Also, get a professional Email address and social media accounts for work, and always request full details before accepting any roles.
Casting directors usually disqualify people who don’t ask further questions about the role they want to play because it makes them look unprofessional.
Don’t forget to also create a resume, and include all the qualifications regarding acting that you have.
9. Put Yourself Out There
Throw your weight around, make yourself known, even if it’s on the street of social media. Create reels of movies you have been part of, and post. If there have been no roles, create a reel of your monologues and have it taped professionally.
For a start, accept all roles, including extra, low-budget movies, student movies, comedy skits; these will also be added to your resume.
Grow your page and followers on social media; it is an added advantage and should be added to your resume.
10. Get an Agency or a Manager
They help shorten the work you have to do, like applying for jobs, getting acting gigs, and bargaining for better pay.
Actors and actresses with managers or agents have higher chances of getting better pay.
The Top Mistakes New Actors Make

Acting, as a career, also has challenges and some mistakes that should be avoided. Identifying and knowing these mistakes is paramount so as not to waste time or get frustrated.
Some of these mistakes are;
Depending Solely on Talent
Talent is good, but working on that talent is better and important. The importance of practising and perfecting acting talent can not be overemphasised.
Even actors who have been in the field for years practice. Practice voice control, body language and how to adapt to different roles, don’t just practice only lines.
Practice when you see a script, pretend you are the actor, practice monologues, and don’t stop practising.
Lack of Persistence
Having thick skin is necessary in the entertainment industry, especially in the movie industry. The industry is competitive, and as a new person, there might be fewer opportunities.
You should not be discouraged; everyone had it all figured out at once. You should toughen up and decide not to give up.
Fame and success come with consistency. Billboards, awards, ambassadorial deals and the rest are associated with success, which is a product of consistency and persistence.
Avoiding Social Networks
The movie industry thrives on network currency. Talent is not enough without networks and relationships.
These relationships will provide you with gigs, news and information that you need to survive in the field.
Being Unprofessional
Whether you have gotten a main role, an extra or are just intending, you have to be a professional. Have your documents with you, such as headshots and a resume, mostly as soft copies.
During acting jobs, don’t come late, be prepared, practice your lines and give your best to any role you are being assigned to.
Limiting Yourself
Earlier, I stated that you should learn your style, but it is important to note that you should not limit yourself to that style or role alone.
Timini plays the loverboy role more, and he is good at it, but he doesn’t feature as a lover boy in all the movies he has acted in.
Know your style, but don’t limit yourself to one style; be versatile. A one-style actor or actress is vulnerable.
Also, acting changes with time, be involved, fully evolve. Movies made ten years ago are different from those made recently.
Neglecting Self-Care
Although you want to make money and fame, don’t forget, your most valuable asset is yourself. To get any role, be a superstar and perform well, you need to be fit in every aspect.
Take good care of yourself, rest, and pay attention to your mental health. Take care of your physical appearance, watch what enters your body, and also, get hobbies outside of acting that can make you happy and relaxed.
Conclusion
Most importantly, note that acting is not a day job; it is not something that can be perfected in a day, which is why it is called art.
Acting takes practice, persistence and discipline. It is one of those fields where you keep putting all in, not knowing the day of breakthrough.
Some people had their big moment early in their career, while some had to spend years with lots of hard work.
Keep showing up, practising, learning, unlearning, and improving. Also, there’s no one way or right way to have that ‘big moment’. What works for you might not work for others.
Many successful Nollywood actors started by collaborating with professional production teams.
