The reason why it is difficult for new actors to break into the Nigerian movie industry is that directors like me prefer to work with popular actors who would make their film project successful. Unless you’re a social media influencer with thousands of followers, it can be difficult to get acting jobs.
But the good news is that if you are someone who has the dream of becoming a Nollywood actor or actress, one of the fastest ways to get noticed is through online auditions – especially free ones.
With the Nollywood industry constantly expanding, especially with Netflix, Showmax, and YouTube movies, producers and directors are always searching for fresh faces and new talent.
The good news? You don’t need to live in Lagos or pay heavy fees to start. Many auditions today are done virtually and free of charge.

A Nollywood online audition is an opportunity to apply for movie roles with your phone without having to go for a physical registration or a physical screening.

Also, follow casting directors on social media so you can see new audition opportunities. Always confirm details directly from the official platform or their verified social media page before applying.
How to Identify a Legitimate Audition
The Nigerian entertainment movie is filled with scammers that want your hard-earned money, so it’s vital to know what to look out for.
- Legit auditions usually have:
- A verified production company name or website.
- Clear audition instructions (age, role type, script, or video requirements).
- No large registration or “agent” fees.
- Official contact details and social media presence.
- Avoid auditions that:
- Ask for money before you even audition.
- Promise “instant movie roles.”
- Use vague email addresses or anonymous WhatsApp numbers.
How to Prepare for an Online Audition
- Choose the right monologue: Pick a scene that matches your age, emotion, and tone. Keep it under 2 minutes.
- Set up your space: Use good lighting and a quiet room. A plain background helps focus attention on your performance.
- Record with confidence: You don’t need expensive gear – your smartphone works. Focus on clarity and emotion.
- Follow submission instructions exactly: Use the correct video format (e.g., MP4), name your files properly, and submit before the deadline.

Getting noticed takes consistency and preparation.
