Starting a YouTube channel and becoming successful is not an easy task, especially if you make the mistake of trying to make quick money. YouTube requires strategy, creativity, consistency and passion for making videos.
When I started my first YouTube channel in 2022, I did not know what I was doing, but I knew I wanted to share my knowledge. I was not familiar with YouTube niches or video editing. I made a lot of mistakes, but today I know better.
In this post, I will be guiding you on practical step-by-step instructions on how to start, grow, and succeed as a YouTuber – even if you’re starting with just your phone.
How to Start a YouTube Channel

Here are the strategies to start your YouTube channel;
- Define Your Purpose and Niche
- Plan and Create Quality Content
- Optimise Your Channel
- Master YouTube SEO
- Be Consistent and Post Regularly
- Engage with Your Audience
- Monetise Your YouTube Channel
- Track Your Analytics and Improve
- Build a Personal Brand Beyond YouTube
- Stay Inspired and Keep Learning
1. Define Your Purpose and Niche
The first requirement for starting a YouTube channel is to identify the reason why you want to make videos for the internet. There has to be a reason why you want to become a YouTuber.
I was already running a successful educational blog, and I needed to expand my audience reach to YouTube. So, I started making videos about the things I wrote in my blog articles.
Success in the YouTube space requires intentionality, as you would fail if you decided you wanted to make random videos about everything. If you take a look at your favourite YouTubers or influencers you follow, you’d realise they are known for one thing and not everything.
As a beginner, you may not have a niche figured out, and there is a tendency to make videos about everything you find interesting.
In that case, you can start doing what comes to you naturally, but, as time goes on, you will have to narrow down your focus to a particular niche.
Sometimes, it will require starting a second channel and handling it professionally since you have found your niche.
Popular YouTube Niches for Beginners
- Educational content (tutorials, how-to videos)
- Lifestyle & vlogs
- Comedy or skits
- Beauty & fashion
- Gaming & tech reviews
- Food and cooking
- Motivational or religious content
My recommendation is to go for a niche that aligns with your passion and what people are actively searching for.
2. Plan and Create Quality Content
After you have identified the type of video content you want to be the theme of your niche, the next step is to plan how to create quality videos.
With everything now being cinematic and fast-paced, you want to learn how to create videos that can capture the attention of your audience.
Here is exactly what I will do if starting a YouTube channel today;
- Research ten (10) evergreen video topics or titles for my niche.
- Write a YouTube video script for the 10 topics.
- Make videos on the researched topics.
- Post the videos within the space of two (2) weeks.
You might ask the best way to research YouTube video ideas. You can use Google and YouTube search to see topics people are always searching for.
Content Planning Tips
- Write a simple script or outline before filming.
- Shoot in a quiet, well-lit space.
- Keep your videos short and engaging (under 10 minutes for beginners).
- Add B-roll footage or visuals to make your story flow better.
Equipment to Start With
| Item | Description | Estimated Price (₦) |
|---|---|---|
| Smartphone (1080p camera) | For shooting videos | ₦80,000–₦200,000 |
| Lapel mic | For a clear voice recording | ₦5,000–₦15,000 |
| Ring light or LED light | For the lighting setup | ₦10,000–₦25,000 |
| Tripod stand | To stabilise shots | ₦7,000–₦15,000 |
For video editing, ensure you learn the basics using CapCut, Premiere Pro, or any app you find easy to understand.
3. Optimise Your Channel
Before publishing your first video on YouTube, ensure you optimise your channel so your videos can be suggested to your potential audience.
I am aware you’re just starting up your channel, but you need to ensure your page looks professional. Your audience should be able to see you as an expert in your niche just from your page and social media pages.
First impressions matter. Treat your YouTube channel like your online brand.
Channel Optimisation Checklist
- Use a clear profile photo (your face or logo).
- Add a banner that describes what your channel is about.
- Write a channel description with keywords (e.g., “lifestyle vlogs,” “educational tutorials for beginners”).
- Organise your videos into playlists.
- Include social media links in your “About” section.
4. Master YouTube SEO
Mastering YouTube SEO is the secret sauce to getting a large number of views, which will build your audience and grow your channel.
This mastery involves learning how to identify topics that people are searching for and how to structure your videos for potential success.
For example, my channel has evergreen topics for students, which means I get most of my traffic from students searching for information online.
If you are into lifestyle content, you also need to learn how to make your videos stand out and remain relevant for a long period of time.
If you want people to find your videos, you must understand YouTube SEO.
Basic SEO Tips for Beginners
- Include your target keyword in the title (e.g., “How to Start a YouTube Channel”).
- Write detailed video descriptions (100–200 words).
- Use tags related to your topic.
- Add captions/subtitles – they improve accessibility and ranking.
- Create custom thumbnails with bold text and clear visuals.
5. Be Consistent and Post Regularly
Lack of consistency is the reason why many people fail as YouTubers. They start their channel with the wrong mindset, thinking they will hit 4000 watch hours in one month. It is possible, but not the case for most people starting without any large following on social media.
As a newbie YouTuber, if you stop posting videos, your channel will not be suggested to viewers. This is why you should adopt a realistic strategy to upload videos to your channel.
As stated earlier, you need ten (10) videos to launch your channel, and consistent uploads for the YouTube algorithm to understand your content and suggest it to the right audience.
YouTube rewards consistency. You don’t need to upload daily — even one high-quality video per week can help your channel grow.
Content Schedule Example
| Day | Task |
|---|---|
| Monday | Script writing & planning |
| Tuesday | Shooting |
| Wednesday | Editing |
| Thursday | Uploading & optimizing |
| Friday | Promotion & engagement |
6. Engage with Your Audience
Engaging with your audience as a small YouTuber is necessary to grow your channel. Ensure you reply to comments and commendations to help your viewers and make them feel special.
Till now, I still make time to reply to comments on my YouTube channel. It has been one of my biggest selling points.
Sometimes, it is my subscribers who give me recommendations on the type of video to make, which always becomes successful.
Reply to comments, ask for feedback, and use polls or community posts to involve your viewers. Engagement builds loyalty and helps your videos perform better in the algorithm.
7. Monetise Your YouTube Channel
The first yardstick for the success of a YouTube channel is meeting the Google AdSense monetisation requirement.
The YouTube Partner Program will enable you to earn money from ads when people watch your content on YouTube.
The general requirement to join the YouTube Partner Program is to reach 1000 subscribers and 4000 watch hours. This may look like an impossible task, but trust me, if you have a niche and post consistently, you will be able to build an audience and meet the earning requirements.
Other Ways to Earn from YouTube
- Affiliate marketing (earn a commission from product links)
- Sponsorships from brands
- Selling your own products or services
- Channel memberships & Super Chats during live streams
8. Track Your Analytics and Improve
The YouTube Studio app is a platform for managing your videos and getting real-time data on your video performance.
On this app, you will see analytics about your videos that are performing well, as well as recommendations for the type of contents that interest your audience. Using all of this data, you will be able to make your videos better.
For example, using the average view duration metric, you will see how long people are watching your video for and what section of the video grabs their attention. All of this information guides you when making your next content.
9. Build a Personal Brand Beyond YouTube
As you begin to build your followership on YouTube, ensure to explore other social media platforms to diversify your traffic.
Promote your videos on Instagram, TikTok, X (Twitter), or Facebook.
Collaborate with other creators, and consider building a website or newsletter to grow your audience outside YouTube.
10. Stay Inspired and Keep Learning
Every successful YouTuber started small. Focus on progress, not perfection.
Watch tutorials, join creator communities, and study successful Nigerian YouTubers for inspiration.
As a newbie YouTuber, don’t focus on instant success or your video going viral. Believe in the process by constantly learning and improving the qualities of your video.
As time goes on, you will realise that some videos will do well while a few might flop. It is all part of the learning process.
Final Thoughts
Becoming a successful YouTuber takes time, patience, and consistency. Don’t wait for the “perfect setup” – start with what you have, learn as you go, and keep improving.
Your first video may not go viral, but your journey of growth is what will make you stand out in the long run.
Let me know in the comments if you have any questions or need further clarification. I would love to hear from you.
