I have been a content creator for over four years now, and when I say creating content online is a difficult job that requires an excellent strategy, especially if you want to be successful.
Many Nigerians get inspired to become creatives when they hear the millions of dollars skit makers and creators like Mark Angel, Peller, BrainJotter, Broda Shaggi, Blessing Olarewaju and the rest make in a month.
But, behind those huge amounts of money you hear and see online, there is a lot that goes into building a successful career as a content creator in Nigeria. The overall open secret is consistency and believing in your ability.
In this post, I will share with you my strategies and the common mistakes you must avoid to become successful with no experience.

1. Discover Your Niche and Passion
The first steps to making money as a content creator or influencer in Nigeria are finding your niche and discovering your passion or talent for the kind of videos you want to create.
One of the most common misconceptions among Nigerian youths is thinking skitmaking or comedy is the only way to become a successful creator. It is why nowadays, you see everyone going into comedy, and a majority do not make it.
Content creation is diverse, and you must first identify your passion and create a niche around it. Even if you don’t have the passion, you can master a niche and monetise your skill. But it is always easier to do what naturally aligns with your personality.
Popular Niches in Nigeria
The following are the most common social media niches in Nigeria;
- Comedy & Skits
- Lifestyle & Vlogs
- Beauty, Fashion & Makeup
- Education & Career Guidance
- Tech & Gadget Reviews
- Food & Cooking
- Music, Dance & Entertainment
- Faith & Motivation
- Business, Finance & Money-Making Tips
- Gaming & Entertainment Reviews
- Agriculture & Farming Content
- Travel & Culture
Ensure you figure out the type of content, as it is the first step to success. Don’t make the mistake of saying you want to create multiple niches (i.e., creating more than one type of content).
It is normal not to know the particular niche you’re good at when you start; that’s why you need to just start, fail, and repeat. You don’t have to figure everything out before you start creating content online.
2. Study Successful Social Media Influencer
The open secret to success in any field or business is learning from successful practitioners. To become a successful content creator, search for those who are currently creating the kind of content in your area of interest and identify what differentiates them from the crowd.
- What type of video do they create?
- Are their videos short, long, entertaining or storytelling?
- How often do they post videos?
- What time of the day do they post?
- How are their videos being edited?
The above are a few among many questions you need to ask to know the secret ingredient of social media influencers in Nigeria.
Ensure to research to guarantee your place in the social media space. As a creative, the best approach is to copy what is already working and modify it to suit your purpose.
3. Learn Video Creation and Editing
Content creation in Nigeria involves videos, article writing and infographics. To make it in this field, you need to learn how to create and edit videos or write content.
I admit it can be overwhelming for you to acquire these skills, especially if you don’t have a foundation in videography.
You may even have the limitation of not having a phone with good camera quality or a microphone to capture clear audio. My advice to newbies is never to allow any of these limitations to prevent them from pursuing their dreams.
The key is to start creating now with what’s at your disposal, even if it means borrowing people’s phones to make videos like I did when I started this journey. You don’t need expensive equipment or an iPhone to become a content creator in Nigeria.
Content Creation Skill
The following are some of the skills to acquire or learn
- Storytelling & Presentation: Learn how to capture attention with your words, tone, and delivery.
- Filmmaking Basics: Understand lighting, sound, and framing. Even if you’re using your phone, good visuals matter.
- Editing Skills: Use tools like CapCut, VN, or Adobe Premiere Rush to polish your videos.
- Design & Branding: Canva is your best friend for thumbnails, flyers, and graphics.
- Marketing & Community Building: You need to know how to engage your audience and grow your reach.
You don’t need to master everything at once. Start small, learn as you go, and keep improving.
4. Set Up the Right Tools
As a content creator, there is basic equipment you need to create videos for TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, etc.
You don’t need to spend a huge amount of money as your initial investment should be on a phone with a good camera and microphone with the best quality.
Equipment Needed
Here’s what you’ll need to begin:
- Smartphone with a Good Camera (iPhone, Infinix, Samsung, or Tecno can work).
- Tripod or Ring Light (affordable ones are sold in Computer Village or online stores like Jumia and Konga).
- Microphone – Audio quality can make or break your content. Lapel mics are affordable.
- Editing Apps – CapCut (free), VN, InShot, or DaVinci Resolve (PC).
- Internet & Data – MTN and Airtel usually offer better streaming speeds in most areas.
As you grow, you can upgrade to professional gear like DSLRs, gimbals, and studio lights. But don’t wait until you have the best equipment. Start with what you have.
5. Start Creating Content & Engage Audience
The only way for you to become successful is to start creating content now, not tomorrow or next month.
It is normal to feel like you’ve not figured things out and you need more time to plan. But the truth is, you should start making videos with the available equipment. You will eventually learn from your failures and grow.
Also, a common mistake I see people make is posting their first video and spamming their friends’ DM or WhatsApp status with a link to their videos.
During your research phase, you should have identified your potential audience. So, the goal is to learn how to reach your potential audience and not your friends or family.
I always advise beginners to hide their videos from people within their immediate environment to gain traction and identity on the social media algorithm.
Another thing you should do is to grow and engage your audience, which is a slow process. Ensure you reply to comments on your videos.
Growing your Account
With the right strategy, you can start gaining popularity online through the following processes;
- Use Hashtags & Trends: Join trending challenges on TikTok or Twitter. Nigerians love to jump on what’s hot.
- Collaborate: Partner with other creators in your niche to cross-promote your content.
- Engage Actively: Reply to comments and DMs, ask your followers questions, and build real connections.
- Leverage Nigerian Pop Culture: From Big Brother Naija to Afrobeats trends, local culture can give your content a boost.
An engaged audience is more valuable than a large one. Even with 5,000 loyal followers, you can build a strong brand.

6. Monetise Your Content
Monetising your content is how you make money from your videos online. It could be through a direct partnership program of the social media platform or other methods, like;
- Brand Deals & Influencer Marketing: Brands will pay you to promote their products once you have a strong following.
- Affiliate Marketing: Promote products and earn a commission on each sale (e.g., Jumia affiliate program).
- Selling Products or Services: Launch your own merch, online courses, or digital products.
- Crowdfunding & Fan Support: Platforms like BuyMeACoffee and Patreon allow your audience to support you directly.
In Nigeria, many creators combine two or more of these streams to maximise their income.

- Learn from Analytics: Study your performance. What type of posts do people engage with most?
- Network: Connect with other Nigerian creators through events, online communities, or collaborations.
- Keep Improving: Upgrade your skills, test new ideas, and never stop learning.
Remember: the more you create, the better you’ll get.
